WTF is shiny spray?

After wandering around for a few months looking like an ungroomed terrier, I finally decided that yes, it’s time for a haircut. Normally I’d just razor a bit off my fringe and make do, but I’m trying to be all new and improved and Do Things The Proper Way for a while, to see if I like it.

The place I get my hair cut at is a walk in off the street type place. You just wander in, they tell you someone can see you in 30 minutes, so you wander off and come back then. It is mostly men in the waiting area because what these places are really good at is the short back and sides (but if you asked nicely for a mullet, they could probably do that too). At the end of a standard session (which for me is saying “yes” a lot when the ask about length, layers and all that I was offered “shiny spray”. Could a lady out there please tell me what this is? I refused politely. *sigh* I never was one of those women who can cheerfully spend 5 hours having their hair done. Just cut it and get me the hell out.

In other news, I have managed to win the bidding on a slice of the 2003 Sacramento Yellow Pages. It’s a 2 inch slice, like thick cheque book. If anyone has any ideas as to what I can do with this, please leave your comments. Thanks :)

From what I’ve read, I think it’s something like spray-on silicone for your hair. The new hot rollers I bought had two settings instead of just on and off. You can choose "regular heat" or "ionized heat". Can you tell me, do I want my hair "ionized"? Is that a good thing? I thought I just wanted to make the ends stay together and turn under a little.

Here in the US, if you watch some of the makeover shows, they talk a lot about putting "Product" on your hair. I’m not sure what that is but apparently if you don’t use "Product", you are deserving of an upturned nose and a slight sneer. I watched one hairdresser say with a ‘tut, tut, tut’, "Evvvveeeryone uses Prahhhduct now, dahhhling". He went on with a slight condescending tone as the poor girl cringed in the chair, "Were you rahhhised by wohhhlves, dahhhling?"

"Product" is the blanket term used to describe everything from gel to mousse (not the chocolate kind, unfortunately) to wax and any number of other things designed to go into your hair that’s not specifically shampoo and conditioner. It’s a silly term. One that I used quite often until I realized that the salon people actually used this term, too. Here I thought I was making fun of them, and all the while, I was speaking their language. Who knew?

As for "shiny spray" I’m going to have to agree with Chessie on this one. Sounds just like something one sprays on to make one’s hair shiny.

They also have stuff that you can put in one’s hair to make it look unwashed. whee.

And I think you should have the slice of Yellow Pages covered in some sort of laminate, and made into a key ring thingie.

I must admit that I do in fact own a bottle of "product" (but it always makes me laugh when I’m paying for my haircut they say "Are you OK for product?"). It’s called anti fizz or something and is supposed to make my hair stop going FOOF at the sides (some women go for height, my hair goes for width) but it is, in fact, exactly what J mentions. It just makes me look like I didn’t wash my hair. $7.95 it was too. Hrmph!
